Washington Capitals star Alexander Ovechkin has officially surpassed the goals record set by Wayne Gretzky back in 1999. It took Gretzky 1,487 games to achieve the record, and Ovechkin broke it in 1,487 games.
The record has stood for 26 years and has now been broken by the Capitals superstar. Ovechkin is one of the greatest players the NHL has ever seen, and he has now passed “The Great One.”
In the lead-up to the record being broken, social media and reports were deemed “The Gr8 Chase.” That chase is now over, as Ovechkin stands alone on the mountaintop in total goals scored. He has no one left to chase, and can only set a new record with the rest of his career.
